Leonardo R. Espinel, Jr., MD, FAC

Iknew I wanted to be a doctor at a very early age. My parents owned a pharmacy and in most Latin countries at the time people with common-day ailments could walk up to a pharmacy, discuss the symptoms with the staff and get the medicine they needed to treat their illness. I enjoyed helping patients in this setting. Now that I am a surgeon, I continue to enjoy helping patients. I strive to ensure my patients understand the reason for their illness, indication for surgery and what to expect thereafter. My patients are the most important part of the patient-doctor relationship. When I am not in the office or hospital, I enjoy running, bicycling (spinning), family time and listening to Pearl Jam. I am a strong believer is using technology to advance the practice of surgery. I approach each surgery using the best minimally invasive technique available for each individual patient. I have seen how minimally invasive and robotic surgery provides clinical advantages and positive outcomes affording the patient minimal blood loss, quicker return to full activity, shorter hospital days, small incisions and reduced pain levels. I serve as a Proctor for surgeons all over the country who are learning robotic techniques and I personally have performed over 500 successful robotic assisted laparoscopic procedures.
