Timothy R. Shaver, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Ihave been asked many times if I always knew I wanted to be a surgeon, and I always say “Ever since my third grade teacher suggested I could be one.” Since then, I have tried to be the best surgeon I could be. In my surgery training at Army Medical Center, we learned to be good technical surgeons, but we also learned how to talk with patients so they could easily understand their disease and why we needed to do surgery for them. The most important thing a surgeon can do is have the technical ability and experience to face any issue that comes up in the operating room. My training has prepared me for this and I continue to add to my knowledge and skills through lifelong learning through reading, conferences and hands-on teaching. I truly enjoy taking care of patients and believe there is no better place to work than in the operating room. I enjoy time with my family whether at home, traveling, attending high school football games, Nationals baseball games or high school rugby matches. I also spend time woodworking and doing DIY projects as well as working in the yard. I am extremely proud of my wife and my three sons and have always tried to balance my professional life with my family life. Although not always easy, I have been fortunate to coach several of the sports teams on which they have played and am very thankful that I can count on one hand the number of games or other events that I have missed.
